It was founded in 1905 and took on its current name in 1918 after previously being known as the School of Education. The college offers undergraduate, graduate, and online programs in areas including elementary education, early childhood education, special education, and Educational Organization and Leadership.
The 3 undergraduate majors involved with this program are Early Childhood, Special, and Counselor Education. Spread amongst the three majors there are 28 faculty in total. There are also 12 graduate programs that include multiple different masters and specialist's degrees.
Among these programs and institutes was the National Writing Project (NWP), which was founded in 1974 as the Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP). [9] On June 23, 2022, the Graduate School of Education was renamed the Berkeley School of Education to more "accurately [reflect its] mission of equity-focused education at all levels." [10]
