Magnolia Plantation is a former cotton plantation in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2001, significant as one of the most intact 19th-century plantation complexes in the nation, as it is complete with a suite of slave cabins and numerous outbuildings and period technology.
The plantation house, first a cottage, is one of the earliest buildings in the present-day city of Baton Rouge. [citation needed]The land was owned originally by James Hillin, an early Scots settler who arrived in 1786, who lived there with wife Jane Stanley Hillin, five children, and six enslaved Africans: Thomas, John, Lucia, Catherine, Jenny, and Anna. The mansion was built for the grandfather of John Drayton, John Drayton Sr. (c. 1715 –1779; son of Thomas and Ann Drayton) after he bought the property in 1738. [7] As the third son in his family, he knew he was unlikely to inherit his own nearby birthplace, now called Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.
The Natchez Garden Club has restored Magnolia Hall. Rooms on the main floor are filled with mid-nineteenth century antiques, while rooms on the upper floors contain a costume collection. [2] Magnolia Hall is open for tours, and there is a gift shop. [3]
