The University of Hamburg (German: Universität Hamburg, also referred to as UHH) is a public research university in Hamburg, Germany.It was founded on 28 March 1919 by combining the previous General Lecture System (Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen), the Hamburg Colonial Institute (Hamburgisches Kolonialinstitut), and the Academic College (Akademisches Gymnasium).
The oldest university in the modern German-speaking world is the University of Vienna founded in 1365. Some universities were established in the 14th or 15th centuries, but shut down for longer periods and later re-opened (e.g. the universities of Cologne , Erfurt , Ingolstadt , Mainz and Würzburg ).
According to the QS World University Rankings for 2024, the university is placed within the 1401-1500 range globally, and ranks between 47 and 49 at a national level.
