Chequers (/ ˈ tʃ ɛ k ər z / CHEK-ərz) is the country house of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. A 16th-century manor house in origin, it is near the village of Ellesborough , halfway between Princes Risborough and Wendover in Buckinghamshire , at the foot of the Chiltern Hills , 40 miles (64 km ) north-west of central London .
The Chequers in 2014. The Chequers Inn is a public house in the village of Smarden in Kent. It has been listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England since February 1967. [1] It was built in the 16th-century and is timber framed. It was subsequently refronted in red brick and features extensive weatherboarding. [1]
Ditchley, with its heavy foliage and lack of a visible access road, was an ideal site. Churchill asked Tree for "accommodation at Ditchley for certain weekends, when the moon is high" and he readily consented. Churchill first went to Ditchley in lieu of Chequers on 9 November 1940, accompanied by his wife Clementine and daughter Mary. [8]
The building is an example of a triple bay oak timber-framed building having “daub and wattle” interior walling fitted within the oak timber frame. Only the North wing (Saloon Bar and Dining Room) of the building still retains the oak framing and original features on the ground floor.
