2926 posts · Joined 2002. #6 · Oct 8, 2004. Ah that's crap eh, I just sold an EA Ghia heater box yesterday lol. I'm pretty sure you don't have to take the whole dash out if you're replacing the core, you may only need to remove the glove box and panel behind it, along with the whole stereo bit.
G. Unknown member Discussion starter. #3 · Oct 5, 2005. on a heat only car, the heater core is accessed by removing the 2 screws. that hold the cover to the firewall in the motor bay. nothing else needs to. be removed besides the hoses.. total replacement time is 10 min.
Lift the nut covers from the windshield wipers and remove the nuts with your 15mm wrench. Drivers side shown: With the hood open, lift the drivers side wiper up at the hinge and wiggle it back and forth and it will come loose. Close the hood and do the same for the passenger side.
I got the replacement core for $65, pliers for $30 (home depot), and threaded rod $6 (home depot). The Ford dealer wanted $800 to do the job. - dash bolt under the steering wheel was a 13mm on my 2004 Mercury Monterey. - I used a 1/4" universal with an extension to get the "almost impossible" screw closest to the firewall.
I need detailed instructions on replacing the heater core on my 67 Mustang. 1. Disconnect battery and drain coolant. 2. Disconnect heater hoses at engine. 3. Loosen screws at choke housing and position hose out. 4. Remove nuts retaining heater to dash.

On the bright side, the Explorer has more room inside to work with. If you do plan to tackle it yourself, it's not an easy task, which is why a lot of folks would rather ante up and spend the $800+ labour cost for a $60 heater core. You're best bet is to do two things, besides the obvious and getting a GOOD tool set, is to get a repair manual ...
I can only speculate as I have a '93, but i fear you're doing too much work! You should only need to drain some of the coolant, then take out some plastics (my truck is 2 screws) in the passenger side floorboard/lower paneling area, then drop out the heater. The heaters are meant to be replaced, the dash is not.
