As the Autobots engage the Decepticons in battle, Starscream hits Jetfire, so Vector Prime decides to take on Megatron one on one. He fights him hoping to recover the map, but Megatron refuses. Hotshot transforms and shoots up at Starscream, but Starscream realizes they are being misled, informs Megatron, and the two Decepticons fly past.
Along with Jetfire, Wheelie sides with the Autobots, and Jetfire sends them to locate the Matrix of Leadership, the star harvester's key, which could also be used to revive Optimus. The group finds the Matrix, which the Primes sacrificed themselves to hide, but it disintegrates into dust.
The Autobots soon discover that the S.U.V.'s mysterious benefactor is the Decepticon arms dealer Swindle. He promises to reward the villains handsomely if they gain some technical devices for him. He plans to these devices to create a weapon which can make any machine motionless (including the Autobots) and tries to "flog" it to Megatron.
