Saint Stephen Martyr Catholic Church is a Catholic parish church located at 2436 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States.The parish was founded on August 4, 1867, and the first church building consecrated and used for worship on December 27, 1868.
At its inception, St. Stephen, Martyr did not have any ministries or social welfare programs. As pastor and one of three original parish staff members, Fr. Gordon helped get the community on its feet by establishing Christian Formation, a ministry of teaching young people about the Bible and Catholicism, for parish children in elementary through high school age groups.
The parish of St. Stephen the Martyr was formed in 1848 and was originally located on Madison Avenue. A temporary church was erected and dedicated by then Bishop John Hughes on December 23, 1849. In 1853 the property was purchased by the New York and Harlem Railroad and a new church was built on 28th Street and opened March 5, 1854.

An old tradition sees this place as the place where the martyrdom of Saint Stephen took place, the martyr deacon mentioned in the book of Acts (Acts 7: 54–60).
