Every year around 40,000 candidates appear in ECAT while there are around 3,045 fully subsidized (A1 & A1-M) and partially subsidized (A2 and A2-M) seats available in UET Lahore and its campuses, making a selection ratio of 7.6% in ECAT based disciplines.
ECAT was leaked out in the year 2011. Since then, the test secrecy and difficulty level has been increased by UET. In the year 2020, test was shifted to computer-based mode by the collaboration of Virtual University of Pakistan. Since 2022, UET conducts computer based test on its own without any external collaboration.

In 2004, UET Peshawar moved from an annual system of examination to the semester system. The system was brought by the vice chancellor, Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani. There are two semesters in an academic year – Fall and Spring. Each semester consists of 18 weeks of teaching and two exams- mid term and final term.
