Glidden McLellan Parker, Jr. was born in Phillips, Maine. He studied literature at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine with the intention of becoming a writer and received a BA in 1935. After furthering his studies in Vienna for a year he returned to Maine to write a novel that was never published.
Glidden Pottery produced unique stoneware, dinnerware and artware in Alfred, New York from 1940 to 1957. The company was established by Glidden Parker , who had studied ceramics at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University . [ 1 ]
Glidden famously employed the chemist Percy Julian in the 1930s, who was one of the first African-Americans to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry. In 1967, Glidden merged with SCM Corporation and became the Glidden-Durkee Division of that company. In less than 10 years, the division became responsible for two thirds of SCM's sales.

Francis Harrington Glidden (1832–1922) was an American businessman best known for founding the company now known as the Glidden Company, which became a subsidiary of Akzo Nobel NV [1] before that company sold the Glidden business to PPG Industries, Inc. in 2012.
