16:9 is a widescreen aspect ratio with a width of 16 units and height of 9 units. Once seen as an "exotic" aspect ratio, [ 1 ] since 2009, it has become the most common aspect ratio for televisions and computer monitors , and is also the universal standard image format for the universal 1080p , 2160p and 4320p formats.

In the 1990s, widescreen televisions offered a wider 16:9 aspect ratio (1.78 times the height instead of 1.33) and allowed films with aspect ratios of 1.66:1 and 1.85:1 to fill most or all of the screen, with minimal letterboxing or cropping required. The difference is that whilst D1 has a 4:3 aspect ratio 960H has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The extra pixels are used to form the increased area to the sides of the D1 image. The pixel density of 960H is identical to standard D1 resolution so it does not give any improvement in image quality, merely a wider aspect ratio.
