The Fontainebleau Miami Beach, also known as the Fontainebleau Hotel, is a hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Designed by Morris Lapidus , the luxury hotel opened in 1954. In 2007, the Fontainebleau Hotel was ranked ninety-third in the American Institute of Architects list of " America's Favorite Architecture ". [ 2 ]
In September 1957, Miami real estate developer Vaughan Connelly bought the hotel for $2 million ($21.7 million in 2023). [2] He subsequently took out a mortgage on the property from the Teamsters Union , who foreclosed on the mortgage and acquired the property in 1960. [ 3 ]
The Mutiny went from being the premier business hotel in the area to a "drug den" over the course of the 1980s, [10] gaining a reputation as a preferred hotel of "cocaine cowboys". [11] Ricardo "Monkey" Morales used it as an office, and one drug dealer, Carlos Fernando Quesada, had a private table. [ 12 ]
