The Railway Series is a series of British books about a railway known as the North Western Railway, located on the fictional Island of Sodor. There are 42 books in the series, the first published in May 1945 by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry. Twenty-six books were written by Awdry, the final one being written in October 1972.

Thomas & Friends (formerly known as Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) is a children's media franchise created by Britt Allcroft and currently owned by Mattel.The franchise revolves around an ensemble cast of anthropomorphic steam locomotives and other vehicles, including the main protagonist Thomas the Tank Engine, who work on the Island of Sodor.
He has an oily, devious, scheming, and malicious nature, and holds a grudge against the steam engines. Initially, he was sent away for bad behaviour, but after a number of return visits, he eventually becomes a permanent member of the North Western Railway. In 1948, he was approached by Edmund Ward, who had recently accepted the Revd. W. Awdry's stories for publication. Dalby illustrated The Railway Series books from the original title, The Three Railway Engines (which he re-illustrated, replacing the original art work by William Middleton), up until Percy the Small Engine.
It was made to commemorate the 70th anniversary of The Railway Series, and was the first installment to officially adapt a story from The Railway Series since series 4. The film also saw John Hasler and Joseph May take over the voice role of Thomas the Tank Engine in the United Kingdom and the United States respectively.
