The Volkswagen wasserboxer is an overhead-valve (OHV), flat four-cylinder boxer petrol engine developed by Volkswagen. It also features Heron, or "bowl-in-piston" combustion chambers, where combustion takes place within the piston bowl area rather than in the cylinder head as would be the case with flat top pistons. The switch to water-cooled boxer engines was made mid-year in 1983.
