The project started in the spring of 1967, after Ford's decision to discontinue the Ford GT40 project. During the preliminary tests for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two seeming Ford GT40s in the colors of Gulf oil appeared. They were in fact Mirages based on the Ford GT 40 Mk I, which Ford had discontinued in favour of a newer car.
