Whitsun (also Whitsunday or Whit Sunday) is the name used in Britain, [1] and other countries among Anglicans and Methodists, [2] for the Christian holy day of Pentecost. It falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter and commemorates the descent of the Spirit of Truth upon Christ's disciples (as described in Acts 2 ).
On Sunday 3 June 1770, (the day Whitsun—Pentecost was celebrated on the Christian calendar) Captain James Cook sailed his ship H.M.B. Endeavour, through a broad expanse of islands which provided an unimpeded passage to the north. Cook named the passage "Whitsundays' Passage". [5] Cook's recorded times and dates are often questioned.
