Joseph Clemens Howard Sr. (December 9, 1922 – September 16, 2000) was the first African American to win an election as judge for the Baltimore City Supreme Bench [1] [2] and was later appointed by President Jimmy Carter to be a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, becoming the first African American to serve on that bench as well.
Catherine Curran O'Malley (born August 18, 1962) is an American jurist who served as a Baltimore City District Court judge. [1] She is married to Martin O'Malley, a former governor of Maryland and mayor of Baltimore, and a 2016 presidential candidate. [2] She was an unsuccessful candidate for Maryland Attorney General in the 2022 election.
