Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder among children in the United States, affecting around six million children as of 2019.
During 2020–2022, the prevalence of ever diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was 11.3% in children ages 5–17 years, with boys (14.5%) having a higher prevalence than girls (8.0%). Children ages 5–11 years were less likely than children ages 12–17 years to have ADHD.
This study documents that ADHD continues to affect a substantial percentage of U.S. children based on 2022 data, with 11.4% (95% CI: 10.9–12.0; 7.1 million) of U.S. children aged 3–17 years reported to have ever received a diagnosis, and 10.5% (95% CI: 9.9–11.0; 6.5 million) with current ADHD.
The percentage of children and adolescents who had ever received a diagnosis of ADHD increased with decreasing level of urbanization from 9.4% among those living in large central metropolitan areas to 13.9% among those living in nonmetropolitan areas.
