The NHL awarded an expansion franchise to the city of Washington on June 8, 1972, and the Capitals joined the NHL as an expansion team for the 1974–75 season along with the Kansas City Scouts. The Capitals were owned by Abe Pollin (also owner of the National Basketball Association 's Washington Bullets/Wizards ).
The team debuted at the Capital Centre in October 1974 and kicked of the worst season in the history of the NHL. Washington was just 8 of its 80 games that season and the club would not produce a winning record for nine seasons. Fortunately, Pollin was able to keep the team's head above water during their early struggles.

Coming off their most successful season in their NHL history (48 wins, 101 points, 2nd place in the Patrick Division), the Capitals were expected to take over leadership of the division from the New York Islanders, whose fading dynasty was given a blow after the Oilers topped them in the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals.
