Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde [a] is an 1886 Gothic horror novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson.It follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London-based legal practitioner who investigates a series of strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde.
When Jekyll leaves, Utterson's assistant, Mr. Guest, points out that the handwriting on the letter is very similar to Jekyll's. When Utterson leaves, Jekyll returns and delivers a monologue confessing that he is the murderer. After a brief conversation with Alice, Jekyll leaves. Utterson and Newcomen return, saying they play to lay a trap for Hyde.
However, someone is continuing Jekyll's experiments. The novel takes an even more sinister turn as Jekyll's butler Poole and Utterson are bludgeoned to death. In Anthony O'Neill's 2017 novel Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Seek, which takes place seven years after the events of the original book, Gabriel Utterson confronts a man claiming to be Dr. Jekyll.
