The president of Benin (French: Président de la République du Bénin) is both head of state and head of government in Benin. The Cabinet of Benin is under the authority of the President, and serves to advise and help formulate strategies. It also liaises with ministries and other government institutions.
The Kingdom of Benin, [2] also known as Great Benin or Benin Kingdom is a kingdom within what is now considered southern Nigeria. [3] It has no historical relation to the modern republic of Benin, [4] which was known as Dahomey from the 17th century until 1975. The Kingdom of Benin's capital was Edo, now known as Benin City in Edo State, Nigeria.
He built his empire due to connections with the Beninese political class. [6] Talon was one of President Thomas Boni Yayi's chief financial backers, financing his campaigns in the 2006 and 2011 elections. [7] His company, Benin Control, acquired two nationally owned enterprises, Sodeco in 2009 and PVI in 2011.
In October 2015, Benin's former President Mathieu Kerekou, who ruled the country a total of 28 years during his two spells as president (1972-1991 and 1996–2006), died at the age of 82. [11] After President Boni Yayi had served maximum two five-year terms, businessman Patrice Talon succeeded him.
President Kérékou condemned and sometimes executed various representatives of the former political regime. [6] On 30 November 1975, with the first anniversary of the speech of Abomey, Kérékou changed the country's name to Benin, named after the Benin Empire that had once flourished in neighboring Nigeria (south-central).
