The University of Essex is a public research university in Essex, England.Established by royal charter in 1965, it is one of the original plate glass universities.The university comprises three campuses in the county, in Southend-on-Sea and Loughton with its primary campus in Wivenhoe Park, Colchester.

The University of Essex is a British plate glass university.It received its Royal Charter in 1965. The university's main campus is located at Wivenhoe Park on the outskirts of Colchester (the oldest recorded town in Britain) in the English county of Essex, less than a mile from the town of Wivenhoe.
Forster began his academic career while a postgraduate student at the University of Oxford.He was a lecturer at St Hilda's College, Oxford, from 1985 to 1986.He later held positions at the University of Nottingham (1996–2000), King's College, London (2000–2002) and the University of Bristol (2002–2006).
