Logan is a city in Cache County, Utah, United States. The 2020 census recorded the population was 52,778. [4] [5] Logan is the county seat of Cache County [6] and the principal city of the Logan metropolitan area, which includes Cache County and Franklin County, Idaho. The Logan metropolitan area contained 147,908 people as of the 2020 census. [7]
State Route 1, which became U.S. Route 91 in 1926, ran north–south through central and northern Utah in the 1920s. State Route 2 left SR-1 at Logan and ran east through Logan Canyon to Garden City; this had been built with federal aid as a forest road in about 1918. [30]
Later, when Logan's Main Street was extended north and south, it bypassed Providence, Hyde Park, and the newer communities of Millville, River Heights, and North Logan to the west. This more direct route became the main state highway through the area in the 20th century, carrying SR-1 north of and SR-101 (now SR-165) south of Logan. [7] [8]
In 1969, SR-162's northern end was moved back south to Liberty. In the process, the road from Liberty to Paradise was removed from the state highway system, and the road from Paradise to Hyrum was re-designated as part of State Route 165, along with added roadway from Hyrum to Logan. [2] The route has remained unchanged since.

Logan is the largest city in the valley. At Logan, US 89 splits off to the east towards Bear Lake, while US 91 continues north through the valley to the Idaho state line. Both the Utah and Idaho portions of Cache Valley are part of the Logan metropolitan area. The Utah section of US 91 is defined at Utah Code Annotated § 72-4-115(1). [6]
