"Can't Speak French" is a mid-tempo pop song with a number of influences. It juxtaposes jazz guitar and a swing beat against a 1980s-inspired synthesiser. The lyrics "find[s] the girls at their glummest, desperately trying to impress a guy who turns their "dust to gold" but doesn't realise it."
French Letter was originally released as a single in 1982 – the band's first, despite having previously released an EP. Initially, the song received little airplay from radio stations due to the title's innuendo (a French letter being a British term for a condom), and would refer to the song as "a Letter to France" when playing it. The devil mostly speaks a language of his own called Bellsybabble which he makes up himself as he goes along but when he is very angry he can speak quite bad French very well though some who have heard him say that he has a strong Dublin accent. The name "Bellsybabble" is a pun on Beelzebub, "babble" and Babel.
