Hair follicle: the infundibulum is the cup or funnel in which a hair follicle grows. Infundibulum (heart): The infundibulum of the heart, or conus arteriosus, is the outflow portion of the right ventricle. Lung: The alveolar sacs of the lungs, from which the air chambers (alveoli) open, are also called infundibula.
Defects in infundibulum development can result in a heart condition known as tetralogy of Fallot. A tendinous band extends upward from the right atrioventricular fibrous ring and connects the posterior surface of the infundibulum to the aorta. The infundibulum is the entrance from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery and pulmonary trunk.
The pituitary stalk, also known as the infundibular stalk, infundibulum, or Fenderson's funnel, is the connection between the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary, the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
Other structures associated with the hair follicle include the cup in which the follicle grows known as the infundibulum, [8] the arrector pili muscles, the sebaceous glands, and the apocrine sweat glands. Hair follicle receptors sense the position of the hair. Attached to the follicle is a tiny bundle of muscle fiber called the arrector pili.
The posterior pituitary (or neurohypophysis) is a lobe of the gland that is functionally connected to the hypothalamus by the median eminence via a small tube called the pituitary stalk (also called the infundibular stalk or the infundibulum).
The ethmoidal infundibulum is a funnel-shaped [1] /slit-like [2]: 690 /curved [3] opening [1] /passage [4] /space [2]: 690 /cleft [3] upon the anterosuperior portion of the middle nasal meatus [1] (and thus of the lateral wall of [2] the nasal cavity [1]) at the hiatus semilunaris [3] [5] (which represents the medial extremity of the infundibulum [2]).
The tuber cinereum is a convex mass of grey matter, [3]: 495 a ventral/inferior distention of the hypothalamus forming the floor of the third ventricle. [citation needed] The portion of the tuber cinerum at the base of the infundibulum (pituitary stalk) is the median eminence; [2] the infundibulum extends ventrally/inferiorly from the median eminence to become continuous with the infundibulum.
The words infundibulum and choana are other words for funnel-shaped cavities (which medical English got from the Latin and Greek words for "funnel", respectively), and the renal pelvis is sometimes called the renal infundibulum.
