The term tonpilz or "acoustic mushroom" may refer to a certain type of underwater electro-acoustic transducer. By sandwiching active (i.e. piezoelectric or magnetostrictive) materials between a light, stiff radiating head mass and a heavy tail mass, the transducer can effectively operate as either a projector (source) or a hydrophone (underwater acoustic receiver).
The transducers typically use piezoelectric transducers [3] or capacitive transducers to generate or receive ultrasound. [4] Piezoelectric crystals are able to change their sizes and shapes in response to voltage being applied. [3] On the other hand, capacitive transducers use electrostatic fields between a conductive diaphragm and a backing plate.
Similar to ultrasonic cleaning, megasonic cleaning uses a transducer that sits on top of a piezoelectric substrate. [1] The transducer creates acoustic waves at a higher frequency (typically 0.8–2 MHz) than ultrasonic cleaning (20-200 kHz). As a result, the cavitation that occurs is reduced and on a much smaller scale. [2]

A typical sound reinforcement system consists of; input transducers (e.g., microphones), which convert sound energy such as a person singing into an electric signal, signal processors which alter the signal characteristics (e.g., equalizers that adjust the bass and treble, compressors that reduce signal peaks, etc.), amplifiers, which produce a ...
