This building previously housed a railway depot. The BCO administers trail maintenance, patrol, and search and rescue operations in the Grand Canyon's backcountry areas. The Grand Canyon Backcountry Office manages undeveloped areas of the canyon by following the 1988 Backcountry Management Plan (BMP), as amended. [4]
The Escalante Route is a hiking trail on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, located in the U.S. state of Arizona. It starts near the Tanner Rapids (Tanner Graben) on the Colorado River and follows the river. It also passes by Escalante Creek and ends near the Hance Rapids.
Hiking the many trails leading into side canyons or up to the rim of the canyon is a popular activity for the area. The trail leading the first 3 miles (4.8 km) up the West Fork of Oak Creek, a 14-mile (23 km) long narrow side canyon, is the most popular trail in the Coconino National Forest.
The trail is only known to have been completed a few times: Andrew Skurka, a professional backpacker, was the first to complete the Great Western Loop. On April 9, 2007, Skurka began the route from the Grand Canyon. Averaging 33 miles (53 km) per day, Skurka arrived back at the Grand Canyon on November 3, 2007, 208 days after he began. [1] [2]

SR 64 was first designated as a state highway in 1932 as a route from Williams to the Grand Canyon. [2] In 1935, the highway was extended to the east from the Grand Canyon to US 89. [3] In 1961, the highway was extended further east from US 89 through Tuba City to the New Mexico state line. [4]
