"Pokémon, I Choose You!" [2] (ポケモン！きみにきめた！, Pokemon! Kimi ni Kimeta!) is the first episode of the Pokémon anime series. It was first broadcast on April 1, 1997 on TV Tokyo. The episode was directed by Masamitsu Hidaka and written by Takeshi Shudo.
Ash first appears in the anime's first episode, "Pokémon, I Choose You!". The episode takes place on Ash's tenth birthday as he wakes up late to receive his first Pokémon, resulting in the Professor, Oak, giving Ash a rebellious Pikachu. Ash and Pikachu bond after Pikachu saves Ash from an angry Spearow flock, and the pair become close friends.
