Santa Maria (Spanish for "St. Mary") is a city in the Central Coast of California in northern Santa Barbara County.It is approximately 65 miles (105 km) northwest of Santa Barbara and 150 miles (240 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
The Santa Maria Times formed in 1882. [9] The Bank of Santa Maria was founded in 1890 [10] or 1906, [4] and later became the Security-First National Bank. It was demolished in the late 1960s and turned into a gas station. [4]
Abel Santamaría Cuadrado (20 October 1927 – 26 July 1953) was a Cuban revolutionary and leader in the Cuban Revolutionary movement. He and his sister Haydée Santamaría participated in the failed attack on the Moncada Barracks led by Fidel Castro, during which he was captured and subsequently killed in prison.

[1] [2] Santa María was a medium-sized commercial nau or carrack, about 62 ft (18.9 m) long on deck, and according to Juan Escalante de Mendoza in 1575, Santa María was "very little larger than 100 toneladas" (about 100 tons, or tuns) burthen, or burden, [3] [4] [5] and was used as the flagship for the expedition.
