On the evening of October 16, 1964, Kenneth John Locke, a football player for the Knoxville Panthers, collapsed on the field due to a blood clot in his brain. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa and died on October 21, 1964. [3] The stadium was renamed in his honor in 1964 and bears his name to this day.
