In 1786–87, soldiers of the First American Regiment under Major Jean François Hamtramck built Fort Steuben to protect the government surveyors mapping the land west of the Ohio River, [10] and named the fort in honor of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

In 1853, the locomotive Bezaleel Wells of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived in Steubenville, named after Wells. [5] Wells School in 2010. A school, built in 1876, originally called Plum Street School and for a time named Wells School, was named after Wells. The school was later renamed the McKinley Grade School.

Fort Steuben was a fortification erected in Feb. 1787 on the Ohio River in eastern Ohio Country at the northern end of the Seven Ranges land tract to be surveyed. It was at the location of the modern city of Steubenville, Ohio .
