This is a list of the time offsets by U.S. states, federal district, and territories. For more about the time zones of the U.S. see time in the United States. Most states are entirely contained within one time zone. However, some states are in two time zones, due to geographical, socio-political or economic reasons.
The purpose of the "principal cities" list at the top of some of the time zone entries is to give a brief list of major cities. These should be limited to a maximum of one city per country (within each zone), and not all countries in a zone need to have a city listed.
From east to west, the four time zones of the contiguous United States are: Eastern Time Zone (Zone R), which comprises roughly the states on the Atlantic coast and the eastern two thirds of the Ohio Valley.
