In 1947, after Independence and partition of the country, the demand for the study of law increased. It was also time to look beyond the entrenched British model and restructure legal education to meet the demands of a now Independent India clamouring for equality in access to power, respect and knowledge.
The university was established by the National Law School of India Act of 1986, which was enacted by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The school offers a five-year undergraduate Bachelor of Arts–Bachelor of Laws programme (BA.LLB) and a postgraduate single LLB programme, both of which qualify graduates for an admission to the bar.
