The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America consists of 65 synods which are configured into nine regional offices. Both were suspended from the denomination in 1990 and then expelled in 1995 for ordaining gay and lesbian pastors. In 1956, the Church of ONE Brotherhood was founded in Los Angeles by a gay-rights activist. [13] In 1962, a Congregationalist pastor began an overt pastoral ministry to gay people in New York City. In 1976, the Episcopal Church officially became fully LGBTQ+ inclusive and affirming. [ 14 ]
