Oneida Baptist Institute was founded by James Anderson Burns [1] with the intent of bringing an end to the culture of feuds and violence in Clay County, Kentucky.Burns aimed "to teach the children of the hostile clans to love each other and not fight," believing that a combination of education and Christian love would cause their feuds to "stop automatically."
James Anderson Burns (August 2, 1865–September 12, 1945) was an American educator. He was the founder of the Oneida Baptist Institute.. As a teenager, James visited his father's homestead in Clay County, where he was pulled into the violence of defending family honor.
