A lacrymatory, lachrymatory or lacrimarium (from the Latin lacrima, 'tear') is a small vessel of terracotta or, more frequently, of glass, found in Roman and late Greek tombs, and formerly supposed to have been bottles into which mourners dropped their tears.
The Parable of the Empty Jar (also known as the Parable of the Woman with a Jar), is found in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas. It does not appear in any of the Canonical gospels of the New Testament. The parable is attributed to Jesus and reads: The kingdom of the father is like a certain woman who was carrying a jar full of meal.
The event (or events – see discussion below) is reported in Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 7, and John 12. [2] Matthew and Mark are very similar: Matthew 26:6–13. Jesus' response continues with the two short parables. Luke has the more detailed version: And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
Wycliffe's Bible (1395) translates the phrase as "valei of teeris", and the Bishop's Bible (1568) reads "vale of teares". The King James Version (1611), however, reads "valley of Baca ", and the Psalter in the Book of Common Prayer (1662) follows the Coverdale Bible (1535) and reads "vale of misery".
Like the seeds, pearls (of wisdom) placed before swine might simply be swallowed without being digested: repeated without understanding (perhaps as Jesus saw others of his time repeating scripture without understanding it). Matthew 13:44-46 opens this interpretation up a little further.
