The Zachary-Tolbert House, also known as the Mordecai Zachary House, [2] is a restored pre-American Civil War house located at Cashiers, Jackson County, North Carolina. The house was built between 1850 and 1852, and is a two-story, five bay Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It has a low hipped roof and central front, two-story, portico.
In 1797 Mordecai Lincoln bought 300 acres (1.2 km 2) from Terah Templin in Washington County, and built what is known as the Mordecai Lincoln House on the property. He and his family lived in the house until 1811, when they moved to Grayson County, Kentucky. In 1828 they moved to Hancock County, Illinois, where Mordecai died two years later. [5]
The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. At the time of listing it included two contributing buildings on an area of 4 acres (1.6 ha). [1] The house has been included in a tour of historic Franklin houses. [3] The house was built circa 1830 and was expanded twice, around 1850 and in 1907. [1] [3]
The park includes an 18-hole golf course on the land Mordecai Lincoln once farmed. On the other side of the road from the golf course is the Mordecai Lincoln House, built by Mordecai as an adult. It is a state-recognized historic structure. [6] [8]
