State Road 998 (SR 998) is an east–west road in Homestead, Florida, connecting the southern terminus of SR 997 with U.S. Route 1 (US 1). The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a decentralized agency charged with the establishment, maintenance, and regulation of public transportation in the state of Florida. [1] The department was formed in 1969. It absorbed the powers of the State Road Department (SRD). The current Secretary of Transportation is Jared W. Perdue.
In November 1969, after FDOT opened bids for various state construction projects, the Gregg, Gibson & Gregg Inc. put out a $7.7 million estimate to build the causeway from US 1 to the eastern shore of the Banana River. [7] Ultimately, the original Pineda Causeway was opened in 1972, costing about $7 million to construct. [8]
Work on that project is slated to begin in 2014. Work on the current S.R. 85/123 flyover project began in 2009. Anderson Columbia, Co., Inc. served as the construction contractor, with Greenhorne & O’Mara, Inc. providing construction engineering and inspection services for FDOT. [4]
In late 2013, the Florida Department of Transportation began an $80 million project to construct a flyover interchange with US 17-92 traveling over SR 436 in Casselberry. [2] This interchange was built to alleviate congestion at one of the busiest intersections in Florida.
