The Palletized Load System (PLS) is based around two variants of prime mover truck (M1074 and M1075) fitted with an integral self-loading and unloading capability, a trailer (M1076), and demountable cargo beds, referred to as flatracks. PLS trucks and trailers are air-transportable in C-5A and C-17 cargo aircraft. [2]
The Palletized Load System is designed to provide ground transportation for dry and refrigerated containers with a container roll-in/roll-out platform (CROP) or other types of cargo on PLS flatracks. When equipped with tank racks or load handling system compatible water tank racks (HIPPOs) it can also transport bulk petroleum products or water.

[1] [9] The first MTVRs were delivered in late 1999.The MTVR is the equivalent of the U.S. Army's Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV); the Marines do not use the FMTV (with the exception of the FMTV-based HIMARS) and the Army does not use the MTVR.
