Grand Isle #9: In 1999, the Louisiana Artificial Reef Program created the world's largest artificial reef by area. Created from the Freeport Sulfur Mine off Grand Isle, Louisiana the reef is made up of more than 68 structures with over 1.5 miles of bridgework. The reef is in 42–50 feet of water with 27 feet (8.2 m) of clearance. [12]

It was founded in 1891 at the base of what was then McFadden Wharf, now known as the Newport Pier. The Dory Fleet, a registered historical landmark, is considered the last beachside cooperative of its kind in the United States. [1]
The offshore waters are designated as a Marine Conservation area as well as a 1,140-acre (460 ha) underwater park. [1] Visitors can explore tidepools and sandy coves. [15] In addition to the beach, the park has 2,400 acres (970 ha) of undeveloped woodland inland of the coast highway, which is popular for hiking and horseback riding. [15]
