The research by the Council concluded on September 28, 1985 when Governor Deukmejian signed the bill, authored by State Senator John Garamendi, which created the California State Summer School for the Arts. The first session was held in the summer of 1987. [6] The program would prove to be highly successful.

French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts (or simply French Woods Festival or French Woods), is a private, co-educational performing and visual arts camp for youth aged 7 to 17 located in Hancock, New York. Established in 1970, French Woods is among the most prestigious summer arts programs in the United States.
The school is located on 76 acres in Strawberry Park, just outside the town of Steamboat Springs and serves 200 students each summer in programs that include an arts discovery program for pre-teens, an equestrian day camp, an arts training junior camp, a young artist intensive and a preprofessional intensive program in dance and theater. [4]
A Civilian Conservation Corps camp was established at the separate Rattlesnake Springs unit of Carlsbad Caverns National Park in 1938. The arrival of the CCC coincided with a shift to Territorial Revival style architecture in the park, incorporating adobe construction. The camp remained until 1942, when it was disbanded. [2]
During the latter part of World War II, the now-abandoned CCC camp was used as a recreation center for military personnel from a nearby airfield, but was demolished by the 1950s. [ 2 ] Later Park Service structures were designed by Ken Saunders and Del Jones at the Park Service Branch of Plans and Designs in Santa Fe .
In 1976 the School was expanded with the addition of Ballet, Choral, Theater, Media Arts, and Visual Arts programs. NYSSSA was expanded further in 1988 with the Dance and Jazz programs. It became virtual in 2020-2021 because of Covid-19 concerns, and was on hiatus in 2022-2023. It will be relaunched with three programs in 2024.
