It is the capital of the Xanthi regional unit of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Amphitheatrically built on the foot of Rhodope mountain chain, the city is divided by the Kosynthos River, into the west part, where the old and the modern town are located, and the east part that boasts a rich natural environment.
Xanthi was established as a prefecture in 1944 (Greek: Νομός Ξάνθης), when it was split off from the Rhodope Prefecture.As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the prefecture was transformed into a regional unit within the East Macedonia and Thrace region, with no change in its boundaries.

The cabin was renovated in the 1960s by the National Park Service and represents the most intact example of a settler cabin in Capitol Reef National Park. [ 2 ] The Behunin cabin was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 13, 1999.
