The Ranger tab was created in 1950 and is an embroidered quadrant patch worn on the upper left sleeve of a military uniform. The cloth tab is 2 + 3 ⁄ 8 inches (6.0 cm) long, 11 ⁄ 16 inch (1.7 cm) wide, with a 1 ⁄ 8 inch (0.3 cm) yellow border and the word "RANGER" inscribed in yellow letters 5 ⁄ 16 inch (0.8 cm) high.
The U.S. Army currently authorizes four permanent individual skill/marksmanship tabs. Under current Cadet Command regulation, cadets are specifically authorized to wear the Ranger tab and the Ranger Challenge tab, as well as those "approved by The Institute of Heraldry" (TIOH) [1] Other tabs approved by TIOH include the President's Hundred tab, the Special Forces tab, and the Sapper tab. The Special Forces Tab is one of four permanent individual skill/marksmanship tabs (as compared to a badge) authorized for wear by the U.S. Army. Ranger School is open to all Military Occupational Specialties (MOSs) in the U.S. Army, although—as of April 2011—an Army combat exclusion zone still limits some from attending. [14]
The title "Ranger" is the ONLY officially authorized title in the U.S. Army other than rank. That means flatly that a private can address a Ranger qualified General as "Ranger" instead of by rank and NOT be in violation of any regulations. No other title is recognized in the Army but one's rank or merely "Ranger."

If the candidate is successful, he/she will begin the roughly 48 week long basic ranger course.
