Isidor Straus (February 6, 1845 – April 15, 1912) was a Bavarian-born American businessman, politician and co-owner of Macy's department store with his brother Nathan. He also served for just over a year as a member of the United States House of Representatives , representing the state of New York . [ 2 ]
His siblings were Hermine Straus Kohns (1846–1922), Isidor Straus (1845–1912), and Oscar Solomon Straus (1850–1926). The family moved to the U.S. state of Georgia in 1854. After losing everything in the American Civil War the family moved to New York City, where his father formed L. Straus & Sons, a crockery and glassware firm. [1]
A fictional, reimagined "R. H. Macy" (depicted as alive and running the company seventy years after the historical Macy's death, or possibly a fictitious descendant with the same name) was portrayed in the 1947 movie Miracle on 34th Street by character actor Harry Antrim.
