Lesley "Esley" Riddle (June 13, 1905 [1] – July 13, 1979) [2] was an African American musician whose influence on the Carter Family helped to shape country music. [3] Riddle was born in Burnsville, North Carolina, United States. [1] He grew up with his paternal grandparents near Kingsport, Tennessee, not far from the Virginia border.

Maces Spring is a small unincorporated community in Scott County, Virginia, [1] along State Route 614, in an area known as Poor Valley. The settlement consists of a small number of houses. Dobbs County was formed in 1758 from Johnston County, though the legislative act that created it did not become effective until April 10, 1759. It was named for Arthur Dobbs, colonial governor of North Carolina from 1754 until 1764. In 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, the western part was designated as Wayne County.
James City is located in central Craven County along the west bank of the tidal Neuse River. It is bordered to the north by the city of New Bern, the county seat, across the Trent River, a tributary of the Neuse.
