Timelines by year are timelines for one particular year that show the developments for that year within the topical area of that timeline. Lists of years or Tables of years are indexes that list all of the individual timelines by year that pertain to a specific topic.

The following five timelines show the geologic time scale to scale. The first shows the entire time from the formation of the Earth to the present, but this gives little space for the most recent eon. The second timeline shows an expanded view of the most recent eon.

Timelines describe the events that occurred before another event, leading up to it, causing it, and also those that occurred right afterward that were attributable to it. Timelines are often bulleted lists or tables.
The use of this template in a hatnote at the top of an article should be avoided (per WP:RELATED) unless the article and the related timeline article have ambiguous titles. The template can be used at the top or below a narrative section, or below a list in some other format.
