Hereford Inlet is labeled as Little Hereford on a circa 1700 map by John Thornton, [3] and by its modern name on a map published in 1749 by Lewis Evans. [4] The Hereford Inlet Light is a historic lighthouse located in North Wildwood , on the southwestern shore of Hereford Inlet at the north end of Five Mile Beach .
Hereford Inlet, a break in the barrier islands along the eastern side of Cape May, was first used by whalers in the 17th century.Though the area was frequented, environmental conditions such as shifting sandbars and strong currents created reason for concern and in 1849, a life-saving station was built along the inlet.

Five Mile Beach is a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean between Hereford Inlet on the northeast, and the former Turtle Gut Inlet on the southwest. Grassy Sound, Richardson Sound, Taylor Sound and Sunset Lake, as well as an expanse of salt marsh and tidal channels separates Five Mile Beach from the mainland.
