The National Inventory of Dams defines any "major dam" as being 50 feet (15 m) tall with a storage capacity of at least 5,000 acre-feet (6,200,000 m 3 ), or of any height with a storage capacity of 25,000 acre-feet (31,000,000 m 3 ).

According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Pathfinder Reservoir has a cold semi-arid climate, abbreviated "BSk" on climate maps.The hottest temperature recorded at Pathfinder Reservoir was 100 °F (38 °C) on July 14, 1925, July 12-13, 1954, July 22, 1960, and July 7-9, 1989, while the coldest temperature recorded was −39 °F (−39 °C) on January 17, 1930.
The results of the studies caused the cancellation of many irrigation features for the project. The primary project rationale evolved to support Wyoming water rights in the Colorado River basin, retaining water that would otherwise go downstream to states in the lower Colorado basin. The dam provides power generation as a secondary feature.
