Jharkhand (/ ˈ dʒ ɑːr k ə n d /; [8] Hindi: [d͡ʒʱɑːɾkʰəɳɖ]; lit. ' the land of forests ') is a state in eastern India. [9] The state shares its border with the states of West Bengal to the east, Chhattisgarh to the west, Uttar Pradesh to the northwest, Bihar to the north and Odisha to the south.
Ranchi district is the first in the state in terms of population. 8.83% of the total population of the state lives in this district - 56.9% is rural population and 43.1% is urban population. At the time of formation, Jharkhand state had 18 districts. Later, six more districts were carved out by reorganizing these districts. The 23rd and 24th districts- Khunti and Ramgarh (carved out of erstwhile Ranchi and Hazaribagh District respectively) were made a district on 12 September 2007.

The region shown in the map is a part of the undulating uplands bustling with coalmines. The Damodar River , the most important river of the Chota Nagpur Plateau , flows along the southern border. The area beyond the Damodar was once a part of Dhanbad district but was transferred to Bokaro district in 2001.
