Durin's Bane, the Balrog in Moria. Artwork by Markus Röncke. This Balrog appears in The Lord of the Rings, encountered by the Company of the Ring in the Mines of Moria. [1] It survived the defeat of Morgoth in the War of Wrath, escaping to hide beneath the Misty Mountains.
The name "Moria" means "the Black Chasm" or "the Black Pit", from Sindarin mor, "dark, black" and iâ, "void, abyss". [T 1] The element mor had the sense "sinister, evil", especially by association with infamous names such as Morgoth and Mordor; indeed Moria itself had an evil reputation by the times in which The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are set.
There they join Gandalf (Ian McKellen) as he faces the Balrog. They help him to victory, but are unable to prevent him falling from the bridge. The game's plot takes the player to various locations from the book, such as the village of Bree, the elven city of Rivendell, and the Mines of Moria. Unlike the book, however, the finale of the game is the fight between the Fellowship and the Balrog creature in the Mines of Moria (the first volume of the book ends significantly later).
Instead, the Fellowship travels through the mines of Moria. When Gandalf is killed fighting a Balrog, [T 13] Aragorn leads the company to Lothlórien [T 14] and down the River Anduin to the Falls of Rauros. He plans to go to Gondor to aid its people in the war against Sauron.
