Ashmore Estates closed in 1986 because of financial difficulties in a changing health care environment. The structure was abandoned and vacant until 2006.
Illinois' first mental hospital opened in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1851, but the need for two more hospitals serving Northern and Southern Illinois became apparent.
